How Often Should You Clean Your Makeup Brushes?

How often you should do this depends on how often you are using your brushes and what you use them for. The foundation and powder brushes should be cleaned once a week, the concealer & eye makeup brushes should be cleaned twice a week and other brushes require cleaning at least once a month.

Method 1: Using Soap & Water To Clean Makeup Brushes

Step 1

Run your brush under lukewarm water and spread out the bristles using your fingers. It is important to protect that part of the brush where the bristles meet the handle so, try to avoid getting water there. Else, water will dissolve the glue that holds the bristles together causing them to shed.

Step 2

Now, take a small bowl and add some lukewarm water so that the brush can be easily dipped into. Now, pour some baby shampoo or liquid castile soap into water and stir gently.

Step 3

Dip only the bottom half of the brushes’ bristles into the mixture and swirl.

Step 4

Take out the brush and with the help of your fingers, start massaging the soapy water into the bristles to loosen up the makeup and dirt.

Step 5

Rinse the bristles under lukewarm water several times till it runs completely clear.

Step 6

Now, gently remove some water using a towel and pat the bristles dry. At this time, you can also reshape the bristles if you find them became crooked.

Step 7

Now, lay the brush down on a counter with the bristle part hanging over the edge and let it get dry. Once they are completely dry, fluff the bristles a bit.
